• How did you get started in the world of cigars, and what keeps your passion for them alive?
In college, I had a few mentors through my business fraternity who were members of a cigar lounge in Chicago. They started inviting us to the annual gathering where I met a great group of people. I saw the “lounge magic” happen and was hooked ever since.
• What do you enjoy most about sharing a cigar with others?
I love listening to other people’s stories. Smoking a cigar with someone grants you dedicated time with friends, both new and old.
• How do you think cigars can facilitate connections between people from different backgrounds?
Cigars are the great equalizer. If you’re a connoisseur, you tend to be contemplative and curious. Cigar culture, no matter where you go, is welcoming and inviting. Something about a dedicated space, a comfortable chair, and a slow burn keeps the vibe relaxed.
• What unique stories have you heard from people you’ve met through the cigar community?
I’ve met private pilots flying billionaires around, fashion industry experts who belong to exclusive clubs, fellow military veterans who’ve carried out incredible missions, and even lawyers who used to represent high-profile celebrities during their legal battles!
• What role do you think cigars play in fostering a sense of belonging within a community?
Cigars are what draw us together. The fact that there are only a few dedicated places in the city to smoke conveys an aura of mystery and exclusivity. We’re all looking for a place to belong, and once you experience what cigar culture is like behind the lounge doors, you know you’re in the right spot.
• How has your passion for cigars influenced your ability to build relationships within the community?
The cool thing is when you meet a new smoker in everyday life. Maybe you spot a V-cutter on the table or hear the distinct sound of a cellophane wrapper being removed. A quick “What are you smoking?” easily becomes the gateway to a new acquaintance or a lifelong friend. The proverbial “If you know, you know.”
• Can you share an experience where a simple cigar led to a meaningful conversation or connection?
Actually, cigars were what led me to become a private jeweler. I used to host a monthly poker night in my home lounge, and many Chicago jewelers would attend. After becoming friends over cigars, they taught me the diamond business, and the rest is history.
• How do you approach introducing people to the cigars world, especially those who aren’t familiar with it?
Teaching the basics can yield great rewards when introducing someone to cigars. If you can help them avoid a “bad” experience (for example: don’t inhale the smoke!), they’re more likely to stick around and keep learning. My sales background helps, as I like to ask a lot of questions and really get to know what their interests and intentions are with cigars.
• What events or gatherings have you organized or attended that highlight the community aspect of cigar culture in Chicago?
I love supporting small businesses across the city. So when I organize a cigar event, I like to bring the party to a local establishment that can benefit from our gatherings. Whether it’s the local cigar shop or a friend’s bar with an outdoor patio, we’re always supporting the local community. One of my favorite events I attended as a guest was the Summer Serata organized by the Avanti Group. The Italians know how to throw a party… food, gelato, a spritz, and a cigar… say no more!
• How do you see the evolution of cigar culture in the community over the coming years?
I see cigar culture thriving over the next few years. Following the pandemic, we’ve needed to return to in-person events and build those personal relationships. Young people aren’t drinking as much, and young men in particular need somewhere to go where they can connect with mentors or friends. It’s almost like therapy where you can sit down, vent about work, share ideas for future plans, and head home with renewed energy.
• What motivated you to start planning cigar events, and how did you enter this niche?
I’ve always been the “doer” or the “curator” in my circle. Everyone is waiting for someone else to take the first step so they can join in. During the pandemic, I cooked a lot and, at the same time, learned about cigars like the Davidoff Chef’s Edition and Macallan Harmony Collection scotch. I was fascinated by the idea of taking an ordinary cigar-smoking experience and elevating it with food and drink. My most popular event became the three-course cigar pairing with scotch, chocolates, and, of course, cigars.
• What do you consider the most important elements for creating a successful cigar event?
A great cigar event engages all five senses. Sight: the lighting, table setting, the room. Sound: soft background music. Taste: balancing small bites that complement the tobacco’s flavor profile in each third of the journey. Touch: a comfortable chair to relax in and focus on the experience. Smell: I’ve incorporated an aroma kit from Le Nez to train people’s senses and look for different profiles in the tobacco and spirits.
• How do you select the cigars featured at your events, and what criteria do you use?
At some events, I highlight an exclusive cigar that some people wouldn’t buy on their own, like an OpusX or an annual Weller release. But what I love to do is pick an everyday smoke to rediscover. When you smoke something at my event paired with small bites and different drinks, you get a completely different experience from a cigar you thought you knew. I love opening people up to new experiences.
• Can you describe the typical atmosphere you aim to create for attendees at your cigar events?
Approachable and welcoming. At every event, we have absolute beginners sitting next to experienced smokers. New people feel comfortable asking the most basic questions, and the regulars are happy to teach because we see the community growing. It doesn’t matter what you do for work or what clothes you’re wearing. If you like cigars, you’re welcome anytime.
• How do you promote your events to attract a diverse group of attendees?
Social media is essential. I started the Scorpion Nest Podcast to really increase our reach and post interesting content to attract that larger, more diverse audience. I’ve visited lounges across Illinois and recorded videos highlighting their businesses to educate our community and promote our events as well.
• What types of activities or experiences do you incorporate to enhance the cigar tasting experience?
Setting people up for success from the beginning is key. Teaching attendees about the “cold draw” and also how to light and toast the cigar helps with the overall smoking experience. Guiding attendees on how to taste is fun, too. Eating a bit of chocolate before your next puff or tasting a sample of armagnac after a draw really changes the tasting experience.
• What tips would you give to newcomers attending their first cigar social?
Ask questions. It’s okay to be new. Stay hydrated, smoke slowly, and enjoy the experience.
• What advice would you give to someone interested in hosting their own cigar event for the first time?
Start small. Gather a group of 8 to 10 people you know will get along well and watch how the ideas, connections, and camaraderie spread like wildfire.
