The first quarter of 2025 has shown mixed results for the U.S. cigar market, according to the latest report from the Cigar Association of America (CAA). While imports of large cigars, including mass-market categories, experienced a slight 2.2 percent contraction, the premium and small cigar sectors recorded notable growth.
Total imports of high-end premium cigars (valued at over $0.76 per unit) grew by nine percent in the first quarter, from 69 million to 75 million units. This rebound is particularly significant as it reversed a downward trend in January and February, thanks to an exceptionally strong March. Industry analysts attribute this surge to preemptive purchases made in anticipation of possible tariff changes.
Nicaragua’s Leadership and Honduras’ Momentum
The dynamics of the premium cigar market show the main producing countries in clear positions:
- Nicaragua strengthened its leadership in the high-end segment with an impressive 13 percent growth, reaching 44.13 million units and solidifying its dominance.
- Honduras demonstrated solid momentum, gaining 8 percent in its premium cigar exports, with 12.66 million units.
- The Dominican Republic registered a slight 2 percent decrease, suggesting a changing dynamic in this market.
- Costa Rica showed a surprising 82 percent growth, rising from 593,000 to 1.08 million units, which reflects specific demand and adaptability.
Another standout segment is small cigars, whose imports more than doubled with a 116 percent growth in the first quarter. This boom is led by Honduras, with a 366 percent increase, and the Dominican Republic, with a 244 percent increase. This growth is concentrated in higher-value small cigars, which, unlike their low-cost counterparts, are made with 100 percent tobacco.
The CAA report makes it clear that despite volatility and economic uncertainty, the demand for high-quality products remains robust. Premium cigars and value small cigars are redefining the market, showing a clear consumer interest in higher-quality experiences.
