Michelle Abul, Global Ambassador for Sisters of the Leaf in Tampa, Florida, traces her connection to cigars back to childhood, when she watched her grandfather smoke while playing pool. Years later, after an unsuccessful first experience with a flavored cigar, the pandemic brought her back to tobacco through virtual gatherings hosted by a friend’s cigar lounge. From there, her involvement in the cigar world grew naturally.
Her growing passion eventually led her to Chicago Cigar Week and to her role as the first ambassador for the LEGO Cigar Festival in Nigeria. She also became part of Sisters of the Leaf Global Movement, where she found an opportunity to connect people, promote education, and contribute to a more inclusive cigar community.
Visiting cigar factories and tobacco fields has also changed the way Abul understands the product. Seeing the work behind every cigar, particularly the women who have dedicated years to the craft, gave her a deeper appreciation for the industry. Her own preferences have evolved as well: she enjoys Coronas and Lanceros, usually paired with coffee or tea, while her experience at PCA introduced her to boutique brands that expanded her palate.
Today, Abul is also a moderator on Smoking Jackets, where she sees firsthand how much newer smokers want to learn about cigars, etiquette, and the culture surrounding them. For her, education and inclusion are essential to the future of the community. Her own journey—from childhood memories to becoming an ambassador and broadcaster—has taught her that she is stronger than she once believed. Her message is simple: keep growing, keep learning, and keep the community open to everyone.
